Flintshire County Council update on Black Bin collection - Meeting of Streetscene Waste Managers at Hafan Deg Tuesday 17th September 2024 17:00 to 18:30

Message from Flintshire County Councillor Allan Marshall:

You will have seen the reaction on the Treuddyn Community Facebook Group to the Council's proposed 4-weekly black bin collection. I forwarded questions from residents to Streetscene and posted the replies on that group.

Despite two 'call-ins' to contest the FCC Cabinet's decision to have 4-weekly collections, the final vote resulted in 3-weekly collections being implemented later this year. I voted against this.

The basis for Streetscene Waste Collection's strategy is that a nationwide Compositional Analysis of black bins showed that 30% of black bin contents was food. I considered that this must be too high and questioned the validity of the analysis report and have asked for a copy of the Flintshire-specific report.

When our recycling percentages are below the target set by Welsh Government, we potentially incur 'infraction charges' (fines), currently over £1 million that will have to be paid for out of the Council Tax we are all paying.

Some time ago I spoke to some residents who told me that they did not have a food bin so I went down to Mold Household Recycling Centre and got some Outside Green bins and some rolls of food bags. There may be others that do not have them. These can be obtained from Connect Centre in Mold Library, ordering online, or by contacting me directly.

I have recently met with some of the Streetscene Recycling Officers and have invited them to the Surgery I am holding at Hafan Deg from 17:00 to 18:30 on Tuesday 17 September 2024 where they will be available to discuss how recycling works in Flintshire. They will also have some recycling bins, sacks and information leaflets.

I am extending that invite to all Treuddyn Ward residents to come and have an informal chat and discuss issues that you might have.

I know that many people recycle everything they can. However, some things that are put into recycling sacks cannot be recycled so it puts all the recycling collected by the wagons at risk of being rejected due to 'contamination' so all the good work could be wasted.

Please use your best efforts to attend next Tuesday 17 September from 17:00 till 18:30.
